Reading Season is Coming Around, Again...

Something about the End of Summer marks the time when I start to get requests for Tarot readings. I could speculate everyone has financially recovered from Summer vacations, or that we're wanting to get a leg-up on the end of the year itself. Maybe the veil really does thin out as we get close to the darker days of the year. Maybe the Cosmic Coincidence Control Center just doesn't like it when it's hot out and refuses to cooperate. (I can't think of a single reading that hasn't been riddled with coincidences and I thank Robert Anton Wilson's "Cosmic Trigger" for the term)

Whatever it is, this is the time to book your Tarot readers. Just Sayin. ;)

What's happening!?

The Moon card for the new deck I'm working on got into Artspace III's regional juried exhibition! Everything else has been...meh...

Writing blogs kind-of does my head in. I don't think anyone could possibly be interested in these posts, and the low-engagement of "free-to-play" social media doesn't make me feel there's a big enough audience to even write to.

Finding direction this year has been a little tricky, I burnt out on Zanbul at the beginning of the year, totally bummed that I still have so much to do, totally wondering if anyone cares, and totally forgetting how to draw because I want to and not because I had better do it if I don't want to be homeless.

SO, I started another Tarot deck, because why not cure burnout on a long-term project with another long-term project, right? Makes sense.

After a couple of months of that, I started making little circles of art (which I believe you can see some of in the post immediately below this one) because I  needed to do some art that didn't have some huge base of work it depended on sequentially, or otherwise.

On top of all this, I still get emails about the Ellis decK companion book - it's a pile of .rtf documents that may see the light of day sometime. The truth is - it will cost money to print and I basically do this and odd jobs for a living, which financially rules out the possibility of having a print run soon.

I'm struggling with my depression, which is basically like spending all of your time sharing your head with the most negative person in the world, who tells you there is no point to any of the projects, points out you never finish anything, and serves to remind you that, again, none of this is going to  make you much money at all, and could possibly just cost you money.

I'm doing my best. Right now, I'm finding some peace in working on all three projects in some kind of tandem, reminding myself I DID actually finish the Ellis decK so I might be capable of finishing something else, and doing part-time work to help keep us fed and in rent.

I'm doing my best.

What is even happening with Zanbul?

I honestly thought the whole thing would take me two years... I thought, "I've finished a Tarot deck, I can definitely finish a graphic novel! I didn't understand at the time everything I would be putting myself through. Long, long periods of work, focused on a single long-term goal is a pretty good way to burn yourself out. As a result, at the beginning of the year, I decided to say "fuck it" and put all the work from 2014 to 2017 online and call it "Book One."

I'm glad I did, but it's gone now. Here's why:

I had convinced myself I needed to create a book without any words in it. I was in love with how universal I thought this would make the book. The success of the previous work on the Ellis decK had emboldened me to believe that I could convey any idea in my head without the use of verbal communication. Stubbornly, I clung to this idea, no matter how many people would turn to me and scratch their heads. "Book One" would sit in it's tomb online at zanbul.com, and I would keep on drawing... for a while.

As the year progresses, there have been enough setbacks for me to know that Zanbul is not really as close to finished as I would like to believe it is. Fortunately, this has happened in a way that has created a patience in me where there wasn't any before. I don't think I need to "hurry up and get it done" any more. Sometimes when something takes long enough, it makes us realize that to rush it is to trash it.

After a meeting this weekend with another friend and artist, I've made the decision to "write" for Zanbul as well. Part of this meant removing "Book One" from the zanbul website and jettisoning the Patreon account, as well. Some of the pages may end up in a different order, and, to be honest - the shit just isn't finished. When the work resurfaces, there will be text to go along with the visual story.

After a short honeymoon with Fulfillment by Amazon, I've decided to return to handling the shipping directly. I'm shutting down my sellers account as soon as the last of the Ellis decKs have been purchased from their site. Until then, you can buy the remaining plastic Large edition decks for $60.00USD at Amazon.com. Stay tuned for announcements on other deck availability!

Seven of Cups
WHAT DO YOU EVEN WANT?
We’re feeling good, now. We’re rested up and ready to tackle…something. We want some adventure (the 7 is a Chariot card) but which game to play? If we want to get going, we’d better pick one and stick with it.
This card is asking you to define your passion a little bit better. Maybe you like the freedom of being a jack of all trades, but this is telling you that you could really do something if you grabbed one of these ideas and really ran with it. We have a solar disc, an all-seeing-eye, a lotus, a skull, some hearts, a piece of fruit, and a lyre. Each cup is crafted as a different idea, ideologically, directionally, or perhaps randomly. Perhaps this is a rush of ideas coming from different spots in what we want, it’s up to us to sort them out, one at a time. The focus that we do it with is our key.

RETURN TO WONDERLAND
Man it’s been a rough couple of cards! One second we were loving life, then we were bored of it, then we hated on it! Jeez. When was the last time we focused on something positive? Let’s take a break from being a bummer and think about some goodness, even if we have to get out our history book to find it.
The Six of cups holds sweet little baby mermaids! Each one is taking a peak and seeing the other. The radiant light shines right at the level of their eye contact. This innocent engagement is held up by a foundation of healthy, overflowing cups. Relax and keep an innocent point of view, but don’t get stuck in the past, we’re only at six!
